I have an 03 monte carlo. I am looking to buy a scan tool of some kind that can be used for all makes of vehicles. Any idea of a good one to get or look at. I am not looking to spend a ton here. Just looking for a reliable scanner that can point me in the right direction. Vehicle– 1987 GMC v1500 4×4 350 tbi auto

Check engine light comes on but the truck will not give me any trouble codes only the number “12″ trouble code which is “system pass”. Is this truck not storing the codes anymore?Anyone else have this problem in where the check engine light comes on but the computer is not displaying any signs of trouble?Whats up??Thanks.

I am only using the simple jumper key(not a code scanner) to access the codes from the computer and just counting the amount of times the check engine light flashes.
The truck runs good but i am very maticulous on my vehicles being in tip top shape hence the question of the check light.
There are some pretty helpful answers here.Sounds like i actually got some real mechanics to answer this time.I was finally able to retrieve the code #43.I replaced the esc module and now its fine.Thanks to eveyone and i will let this go up for a vote since everybody tried to help with some great answers.
